CMS Medication Updates and Regulations in LTC Settings

From COVID to AI in Telepharmacy

Upon completion of this activity, pharmacists will be able to: Explain the basic applications of telepharmacy technology as they exist today; Recognize the innovations in telepharmacy services due to the COVID-19 pandemic; Describe the background of AI as it developed out of earlier systems such as IBM’s Watson, Google’s search engine and Apple’s SIRI algorithms; Identify the difference between Traditional AI, which can learn from data and make predictions based on the date, and Generative AI, which can create new formulations from existing data; Discuss future telepharmacy opportunities and challenges created by AI.

Florida Pharmacy Law & the Disciplinary Process

Upon completion of this activity, pharmacists will be able to: Describe the life cycle of a Department of Health/Board of Pharmacy investigation from complaint intake through probable cause review, administrative processes, board action, and remedies; Compare the due process rights of pharmacists and permit holders at each stage of the disciplinary process, including notice requirements, access to the investigative file, and available hearing options; Identify the statutory and rule-based grounds for discipline under Chapters 456, 465, 499 & 893, Florida Statutes, and Rule Chapter 64B16, F.A.C., with emphasis on misfills, inspection deficiencies, impairment, and criminal convictions; Formulate proactive compliance strategies—including record-keeping, staff training, and self-reporting—that reduce the risk of disciplinary action and support mitigation if violations occur; Explain the role and obligations of key pharmacy leaders (Prescription Department Manager/PIC and designated representatives) in maintaining permit compliance and responding to DOH inquiries.
